“Secret Agrigento. Ancient Roots”: new opportunity to learn about the exhibition

Registration is now open (free) for the guided tour of the exhibition “Segreta Agrigento. Radici d'Antico”, hosted inside the Anghelone barracks of the State Police in via Crispi in Agrigento. The exhibition, which will be illustrated by the scientific curators Maria Serena Rizzo (Parco Valle dei Templi) and Michael Benfatti (PhD Department of Cultural Heritage – University of Bologna), reveals a chapter of ancient Agrigento, revealing for the first time a natural medicine laboratory and production of an eye drop: the lykion, an ancient remedy with healing properties, created with medicinal herbs.

From the deposits of the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento, never before exhibited finds emerge to testify to the skill of ancient craftsmen in preparing medicines thanks to the wealth of botanical and therapeutic knowledge. The visitor will be led into the heart of an ancient workshop, a health laboratory where local plants and botanical knowledge found expression in wellness products.

The project to create the exhibition and enhance the archaeological evidence held by the Anghelone barracks is part of the initiatives to support Agrigento Italian Capital of Culture 2025 and is the result of an agreement between the State Police, the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples and the State Property Agency.
